LED Lighting Systems

The new LED forward lighting system developed by Racetech Harnessing Ltd represents a new generation of race car headlamps utilising the latest in opto-electronics technology.
Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) can now out perform conventional lighting systems such as incandescents and gas discharge systems both in terms of light intensity and power consumption. Furthermore, LEDs withstand shock and vibration much better than existing light sources and have a very long life-span, usually being longer than the vehicle itself. These reasons explain the move to LED lighting in some high-end road cars.
Prior to the design stage of our headlamps we consulted some of the leading teams & drivers participating in the LMS series (LeMans). We found that teams had been suffering from regular premature lighting failures and drivers were struggling with poor visibility during the hours of darkness resulting in slow lap times. All of this of course is mainly due to the "road car" spec headlights being used which were originally designed for public highways and which struggle to withstand the demanding harsh environments of an endurance race car.
Based on this we have developed our motorsport LED headlight modules which incorporate multi-chip LED light source, intelligent driver electronics, active temperature management system and our own bespoke projection lens system designed to produce maximum track illumination, in a small neat light weight package.
Testing of the lighting system began in 2010 on and off track, and so far we have covered many thousands of testing Kilometres fitted to both LMP1 & LMP2 cars at various race circuits around Europe. In March this year (2011) our forward lighting system became the first ever LED based headlights to race on an endurance LeMans car at the Sebring 12 hours in Florida USA.
